This week, Halesowen’s MP Alex Ballinger rolled up his sleeves to join the team and shine a spotlight on the incredible work being done inside this unassuming store.
Since 1897, Blue Cross has been a sanctuary for sick, injured, abandoned, and homeless pets. Today, the charity supports around 40,000 animals a year through veterinary care, rehoming services, expert behavioural support, and advice for current and future pet owners. But this vital work is only possible thanks to dedicated volunteers like those at the Halesowen branch.

In 2024 alone, the shop’s 14-strong volunteer team processed a staggering 1,734 bags of donations, raising an impressive £92,000 in sales. That’s enough to fund emergency care for 920 sick or injured animals—or provide life-saving vaccinations for over 3,000 dogs.
Mr Ballinger praised the team’s tireless efforts and the wider impact of community-led volunteering: “In our local area and across the country, charity shops are more than just treasure troves—they’re lifelines. They offer affordable finds and give people a chance to give back. It was a real privilege to meet managers Lisa and Carole, and volunteers like Matthew, Hilary and Anne, who give so much of their time to a cause they care deeply about.
“Learning more about Blue Cross’s work—and getting stuck in with the team—was a fantastic experience.”Blue Cross is now calling on more animal lovers in Halesowen to lend a hand. With demand for pet welfare services growing, the charity is urging the public to volunteer, donate, or simply spread the word.
Whether you’re passionate about pets, looking to gain retail experience, or hoping to give back to your community, there’s a place for you at Blue Cross.
