The day’s activities were designed to educate and inspire students about the significance of Victory in Europe Day and its place in British heritage.

All students attended a special assembly led by the school’s Head of History, Mr Whitehouse, who delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of VE Day and its role in shaping the post-war world. Key Stage 3 students (years 7, 8 and 9) also participated in a dedicated one-off history lesson focused on the meaning of the day and the sacrifices that led to the end of the Second World War in Europe.

To mark the occasion more broadly across the school community, the canteen featured a menu of traditional British fare. Students enjoyed classic dishes such as fish and chips, followed by scones, giving everyone a taste of wartime Britain.

Reflecting on the commemoration activities, Eleanor, a Year 9 student, said: “I didn’t realise how much VE Day meant to people at the time – it was really moving to learn about the celebrations and how families came together. The assembly and history lesson made it feel real, and the food in the canteen helped bring the day to life.”

Speaking about the day, Stephen Brownlow, Principal at Gospel Oak School, said: “VE Day is a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that shaped our nation during one of its darkest periods. It’s important that our young people understand the significance of this moment in our shared history. I’m proud of the way our staff and students came together to commemorate the day with respect, curiosity and community spirit.”
