Following the success of last year’s Green Libraries Month, this year promises even more exciting events, talks, arts and crafts workshops running right across the county.
Highlights include sessions with the county council’s climate change team who will be giving their top tips on the simple things people can do to go green. The Community Learning service will also be offering people green themed taster courses, while Waste Savvy Staffs will be running repair and reuse workshops.
At Perton Library Science Fair on 10 May, the Earth Stories Cinema, a family-friendly pop-up cinema, will feature short films on environmental themes, along with nature-based crafts.
At Cannock Library, Dan Myatt from Veolia, will be helping people to explore the wonder of waste, whilst in Stafford library, Severn Trent Water will be talking about water treatment and usage.
At Burton Library, Earth Narratives (in collaboration with the National Forest and Burton Women’s Collective), will explore Burton’s green spaces through walking and writing.
Newcastle Library will be celebrating Gardening Week with a special storytime and garden crafts. Over at Lichfield library, staff from the Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Service will host a ‘Mary the Mole’ craft session for children.
Sue Ball, Libraries and Arts Manager at Staffordshire County Council, said: “The county council is on a mission to make Staffordshire sustainable and it’s great that libraries are doing their bit to help.
“This is our third campaign and it’s a wonderful way of highlighting the importance of taking care of the environment and reducing our impact on the planet. Throughout the month, we’ll be covering topics like climate change, recycling, planting trees and offering people advice and tips on what they can do to help protect the environment.
“I do hope people can visit a library during May to check out the activities, as well as find out about all the other amazing things you can do at your local library.”
As part of the campaign and after a successful pilot last year, all future library cards will be made from biodegradable materials.
