Metro backs national pedestrian safety campaign

A new safety campaign designed to help reduce the risk of collisions between pedestrians and trams is being rolled out across the West Midlands Metro network.

The initiative forms part of a wider national safety drive led by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB).

In partnership with the LRSSB, Metro is launching the ‘Two Lines = STOP’ campaign — a simple yet powerful message encouraging people to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings near tram tracks.

Starting next week, passengers and members of the public will notice eye-catching graphics and signage across the Metro network, including on tram shelters, posters, and dedicated safety signage. These have been designed to stand out and grab attention, even in familiar environments.

Anthony Stanley, Metro’s Head of Operations and Safety, explained: “While trams in the West Midlands continue to maintain an excellent safety record, raising public awareness, especially among pedestrians, is one of the most effective ways to further reduce the risk of accidents.

“We are proud to support this national campaign by the LRSSB, as safety is always our top priority. This initiative also reflects the strength of collaboration across the wider light rail sector to ensure that trams remain one of the safest forms of public transport.”

The Two Lines = STOP message has already been successfully adopted by tram networks in the country, with Nottingham expected to join the campaign later this summer.

LRSSB Chief Executive Carl Williams commented: “Extensive research has shown that pedestrian inattention presents a particular challenge for operators. In response, our campaign graphics have been designed to catch the eye of members of the public, standing out from signage they see every day and may no longer notice.

“While the key message remains the same, the campaign material we’ve developed can be tailored to the requirements of individual networks, and we are delighted that Metro has become the latest to join this national initiative.”
