A century of stage magic: Birmingham’s One-Act Play Festival celebrates 100 years

Held at the Highbury Theatre Centre in Sutton Coldfield on April 26 and 27, the weekend-long event will spotlight six captivating one-act plays performed by talented amateur drama groups from across the region—including performers from The Grange Players from Walsall and other drama groups from Moseley, Oldbury, and Tamworth.

“The One-Act Play Festival has been at the heart of community theatre in Birmingham for a century,” says David, Chair of the BDTG. “We’re incredibly proud to have supported local drama for so long, and this year’s festival is shaping up to be a very special celebration.”

Audiences can expect a theatrical treat across two sessions - Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Each session features three unique performances, followed by live feedback from a professional adjudicator. “It’s like Britain’s Got Talent for the stage,” David adds. “Our judge offers a thoughtful critique on each play - what worked, what didn’t, and why. It’s entertaining, educational, and always insightful.”

Tickets are just £8 per session, making the festival an affordable and enriching experience for theatre lovers of all ages. With such a rich history and a reputation for nurturing grassroots talent, the BDTG’s centenary event is a true celebration of the arts in the West Midlands.
