The event was held at the County Showground on a perfect spring day and started with Helen Mancey, Chair of the Federation, telling the audience that Julia Mitchell, former High Sheriff of Staffordshire, had recognised the great service that Staffordshire Women's Institutes have given to their communities with an Award.
The first speaker of the day was historian Lesley Smith in character as Katharine Swynford. In period dress, she captivatingly wove Katharine's life from her beginnings in Belgium to friendships in the King's Court and probably the most romantic tale in British history as mistress then wife of John of Gaunt. Their descendants became founders of the Royal Houses of York, Tudor, Stuart and every British Sovereign since 1461. Katharine's sister married Geoffrey Chaucer.

Keeping the historical theme, the next speaker was Dr Gareth Williams, an expert in Viking and Anglo-Saxon history. He gave an interesting talk on his involvement in court cases involving disputes over Treasure Trove. It was fascinating to learn how recent Hoards have rewritten history with coins showing a strong link between Alfred the Great and Ceolwulf, King of Mercia.

During the lunch break shopping was high on the agenda - a wonderful choice of produce and unusual items on offer. There was also the opportunity to view competition entries and check out what was planned during the coming year.
The afternoon speaker, Kate Bottley - or to give her her proper title, The Reverend Canon Doctor Kate Bottley - enthralled everyone with stories and anecdotes from her life and career. She showed the video of a flash-mob at a wedding which went viral, launching her into the public eye. It was fascinating to hear of how she became a Vicar, how she brings stories of faith and belief to the widest possible audience and to learn how Gogglebox was filmed. Her candid approach and down to earth style endeared her to everyone and there were many tears of both laughter and empathy.
Kate's take home message was that WI members are celebrated as giving support and friendship and when that happens, magic happens. She reminded the ladies that they were all inspiring women. She certainly is.
Verity Conner, Chair of the Committee that organised the day, thanked everyone for their support which had made the day a great success and gave a reminder that in November, the Keynote speaker at the Christmas event will be Louise Minchin.
