Chairman Anne Bumford warmly greeted guests, to the Annual Lunch Celebration, for Cannock and District Ladies Probus Club. A delicious three-course meal was enjoyed including pate, soup or smoked salmon with prawn cocktail; roast beef, salmon fillet with a fresh herb crumb or veg lasagne; followed by choc brownie, apple pie or fresh fruit and ice cream.
Entertainment followed with songs old and new, such as Old Man River, belted out by Robert, who keeps trying to retire but was warmly applauded by his proud daughter, when he effortlessly sang with such a rich tone. As we listened to familiar songs, beautifully sung by these very experienced singers, Lucy shared that in the audience was a lady she recognised from her childhood. Growing up singing, from age three, almost before she could ‘talk,’ she took part in local music festivals at Chadsmoor and local towns. There, she won a cup and the judge presenting her with that cup was at our lunch so, Lucy sang the very song which won her that Trophy ! Another audience member was given a surprise when Robert, presented a bouquet to a great friend, as it was her ‘special’ birthday. Richly entertained with classic 'Songs from Shows and Old School classics,' the quality of music created a great atmosphere with songs such as, Memory and the powerful I dreamed a Dream, which is mostly associated with Susan Boyle these days but Lucy’s association is with the Show she’s performed it in. Lucy opened with a gentle rendering from The Sound of Music but her finale was, As If We Never Said Goodbye to generous applause from the audience.
The afternoon continued with mixed blessings, when everyone was asked, during a minute’s silence, to think of Past Chairman Joyce Cox, recently passed away. Toasts were made to Absent Friends and to The King. Formal thanks were also given to Paul James Fowler of The Chase Golf & Country Club and his staff, for hospitality and good food. It is felt Paul always goes ‘above and beyond.’ to meet the needs of our Probus Club but his efforts are greatly appreciated.
