From backyard to community hub: How Dudley Table Tennis Club is changing lives
In the heart of Dudley, the Dudley Table Tennis Club stands as a beacon of community spirit and youth engagement, thanks to the unwavering dedication of its founder, Chris Dunkley. What began as a simple backyard activity during the Covid-19 pandemic has blossomed into a thriving hub that has welcomed over 300 participants, with a wide range of ages, representing a diverse array of nationalities.

Chris's journey started when he set up a table tennis table in his garden, attracting local resident’s eager for socially distanced activities. Recognising the community's enthusiasm, Chris established the club, which now holds regular sessions at the Abberley Street Community Centre. The primary aim is to provide a constructive outlet for young people, offering free sessions for those under 16 to keep them engaged and off the streets.
The club's impact has not gone unnoticed. In April 2023, Chris was honoured with the Duncan Edwards Award for Sport at the Mayor’s Civic Awards, recognizing his significant contribution to the community through sports.
Beyond youth engagement, the club fosters social interaction and physical activity for all ages and abilities. Sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday evenings, offering three-hour sessions where all equipment is provided, and coaching is available upon request, as well as refreshments. The club's inclusive approach has created a welcoming environment where friendships are formed, and the community comes together.

Looking ahead, Chris envisions expanding the club's reach by securing a larger venue to accommodate the growing interest. His ultimate goal is to offer daily sessions, continuing to provide free table tennis for under-16s and further strengthening community ties.

The Dudley Table Tennis Club exemplifies how a simple idea, fuelled by passion and commitment, can transform a community, offering a safe and positive space for young people and fostering connections across generations.
