Optometrist, Zyia and optical assistant, Millie, from Specsavers in the Cannock Shopping Centre hosted an engaging session for more than 30 nursery school children, combining fun activities with important eye care advice.

They spoke to the youngsters about how to keep their eyes healthy, played interactive games, and showed them what happens during an eye test.

The session shared insights on early signs of vision issues in children, helping to spread awareness about the importance of early eye care — information that's especially valuable for parents. To make the experience even more memorable, the children had the chance to try on some Specsavers' frames.

"It was a great introduction to what an optician does and what happens during an eye test,' says Ms Amy Oreton, nursery school teacher at St John’s Academy.

"The session was fun and engaging, and the children really enjoyed it. We look forward to welcoming Specsavers Cannock back to our school soon."

Millie adds: "It was fantastic to be part of the lesson and talk about eye tests in such a fun way. The children were really curious, and it was lovely to see their excitement when trying on the frames. They were also thrilled to receive a Specsavers goody bag to take home."

At the end of the session, each child was given a goody bag filled with informative leaflets, pencils, and some seeds to plant and grow into flowers.

"Visiting schools is a great way to educate children about the importance of regular eye tests," says Zyia. "It’s crucial for them to understand how to look after their eyes from a young age and what to expect when they visit the opticians. We recommend children have their eyes from the age of 4, or sooner if any problems are noticed, as it’s a key part of their ongoing development."
