The 12 Year 10 Baxter College students will spend 10 days with a school exchange, working with the Salaam Baalak Trust and exploring the culture of India.

With fundraising events, including a 24-hour static cycle marathon, they have doubled their £500 target, topping £1,000 so far for the trust which supports homeless and vulnerable children.

The trip has been mainly funded by the Government’s Turing Scheme, with each student contributing £200 towards the cost.

They have also received sponsorship from sustainable operational excellence coaching company Unleash and Engage, which has funded T-shirts, caps, water bottles and backpacks for the students.

Deputy headteacher Tim Waites, one of three staff accompanying them, said: “This group of students will work with children supported by the trust, making a real difference to their lives.

“They will also have the opportunity to experience India and visit incredible places including the Taj Mahal.

“It is set to be a life changing expedition and more than anything else, they want to give as much as they can to the trust. Their hard work is testament to that.”

The students set off on April 2 but there is still time to support their fundraising by donating to their Just Giving page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/baxter-college-salaam-baalak?
