Recent closure of a section of the highway for HS2 works gave our Streetscene operatives the opportunity to safely work on improving the area between Hilliard’s Cross and the Cappers Lane slip road.

The clean-up saw four staff collect more than 360 bags of rubbish together with such discarded items as lorry and car tyres, traffic cones and cardboard boxes.

Their work complements that of volunteers from Lichfield Litter Legends who have cleared rubbish from land adjacent to the A38 such as at Cappers Lane.

Councillor Phil Whitehouse, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services, Parks and Waste, said: “I wish to thank members of the Streetscene team for their work in clearing litter from the A38 over four nights.

“Our staff can’t access the road space safely with live traffic so the road closure was a great opportunity for them to clean the areas that are not accessible during their normal working day.

“They have done a fantastic job collecting a huge amount of rubbish from that section of the highway, improving the environment for everyone.”

The Streetscene team liaise with National Highways, Staffs County Council and infrastructure support service provider Amey to anticipate road closures and, where possible, conduct litter picks.

Recent operations have taken place elsewhere on the A38 and on the A5, A461, A453 and A5148.
