The ‘Focus Fridays’ morning sessions take place at Perryfields Academy in Oldbury before school, with breakfast provided, so as not to interrupt preparation for GCSE exams.

Visits have been arranged this term from a police investigator, financial advisor, civil engineer, solicitor and even a jewellery manufacturer.

They began with a session on CPR skills from Band 5 staff nurse Ellie Mcintosh, who hopes to have inspired some future NHS workers:

“I gave them a presentation about my role and we had some interactive activities about vital signs, CPR and how to do an A to E assessment, which is all about assessing their airway, breathing and circulation.

It’s very important not just for nurses but for everyone to know, you could be walking down the street and it could happen to a family member, basic life support is something everyone should know.

I always wanted to work in a hospital setting, I’ve always had an aspiration to help and care for people. Some people are told not to be a nurse as it’s too stressful these days, but I think it’s one of the most important jobs, it’s not easy but it is worth it and you do feel validated helping people and making a difference so hopefully I’ve shown what it can be like.”

Ellie is actually the niece of Head of Year 11, Miss Mcintosh, who was proud to see her engage with the students: “Watching her confidently stand in front of our students, sharing her journey and teaching life changing skills, was a moment of immense pride for me as both an aunt and an educator. She has achieved so much in such a short time, and I knew she would be an incredible role model for our students.

"These sessions are designed to provide valuable insights into various business sectors, guiding students on how to navigate different career pathways as they begin planning their futures. We could not be prouder of our students who have embraced the sessions with such enthusiasm and dedication.

"Over 40 students attended, their respectful attitude and active participation demonstrated their maturity and eagerness to learn. As their Head of Year, seeing their curiosity and drive to explore future opportunities is incredibly rewarding.”

Ellie says supporting her Aunt’s work was something she was keen to do, as Perryfields has played a big part in their family: “I can see how passionate she is about her year group and how much she wants them to progress and hopefully this sort of thing could ignite something in them and give them the motivation to do well in the future.

"It’s not just my Aunt, my twin sister works here too and my mom went to this school, she literally lived just down the road, so it’s really nice to be able to help out.”

Miss Mcintosh believes the remaining sessions will have an equally big impact on students: “As we move forward, I am confident the sessions will continue to inspire our Year 11s to explore their potential and dream big. These opportunities are shaping our students into thoughtful, informed individuals who are ready to step into the world of work with confidence. To say we are proud of them is an understatement. They are a credit to our school, their families, and themselves.”
