Jazz club enjoy fine evening of music and look forward to next event

It was another fine evening of an entertaining mixture of jazz from Sheila Fawkes Cafe Orchestra on February 27 for Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club. The band played well together with Sheila in fine voice, with the line-up being Sheila Fawkes, (band leader and vocals), Terry McGrath (trombone, saxophone and penny whistle, vocal), Tim McGrath (guitar and banjo), Nick Ward (on his antique drums), Mark Johnson (double bass), Dave Deakin (trombone), and Gary Bell (trumpet & flugel horn).

Good tunes for both listeners and dancers included some fine instrumental numbers such as ‘Crazy Rhythm’, ‘Exactly Like You’, ‘Zing’ and the 1939 tune ‘South of the border down Mexico Way’ which was for the film of the same name and its star Gene Autry. A surprise and very nice vocal was from Terry with the Isham Jones composition from 1924, ‘I’ll see you in my dreams’, and this was followed by a Sheila’s vocal on the Hoagy Carmichael tune from 1937, ‘The nearness of you’.

We had a great trumpet solo from Gary on the Will Hudson instrumental from 1933, ‘Moonglow’, and another great instrumental which had a ring of energetic dancers was to the tune ‘Dark Eyes’. We enjoyed a lovely version with vocal by Sheila of ‘April Showers’ the song being introduced to the Broadway musical ‘Bombo’ in 1921 and sung then by Al Jolson. Sheila continued with a Ruth Etting ballad from the 1930’s ‘Don’t Tell Him what happened to me’, with just backing by Tim on guitar, Mark on double bass and Terry playing a saxophone solo. The dancers packed the floor again for the classic 1931 song ‘As Time Goes By’, made famous in the 1942 film ‘Casablanca’ when it was sung by Dooley Wilson as Sam. The band finished on the popular Irving Berlin song ‘Alexandra’s Rag Time Band’ to round off an enjoyable jazz evening.

Tomorrow (March 5) we herald in the month of March when we welcome ‘Roaring Twenties’ to Boldmere Sports & Social Club. For further details visit the Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club Facebook page.
