Highly respected ward manager retires from role after 34 years in NHS

After an extraordinary 34-year career, Marianne Cole, Ward Manager of Malvern Ward, an Older Adult inpatient ward at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has announced her retirement. Throughout her extensive career, Marianne Cole has been a dedicated mental health nurse and leader, leaving a lasting impact on both patients and colleagues alike.

During her time at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Marianne has become known for her unwavering dedication, deep compassion, and ability to lead with empathy. She oversaw the day-to-day operations of Malvern Ward, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for both patients and staff. Her commitment to delivering person-centred care helped build a team that consistently demonstrated excellence in mental health nursing.

Reflecting on her career, Marianne shared: "It has been an incredible privilege to work within the NHS for so many years. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to witness the positive change we’ve brought to patients’ lives. It has been an honour to be part of such a supportive, compassionate team here at Black Country Healthcare. As I move into retirement, I will carry with me the memories of the wonderful people I’ve worked with and the patients I’ve had the privilege to support."

Colleague and Deputy Ward Manager at Malvern Ward, Judith Tavener, recalls Marianne’s nurturing and supportive leadership when she first joined the trust as a Healthcare Assistant. She said: “Marianne always saw something in me that was worth investing in and thanks to her support, I went from a shy healthcare assistant, to having the privilege of being her deputy ward manager for the least seven years.”

Throughout her career, Marianne has been pivotal in advancing high standards of care for older adults, particularly on inpatient wards. She has championed improved care practices which has led to better patient outcomes. Marianne’s leadership has transformed Malvern Ward and set a benchmark for care across the Trust, while also mentoring colleagues to maintain these high standards in all areas of older adult care.

Deborah Cooper, Divisional Director of Adult Mental Health at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust commented: “We are incredibly grateful for Marianne's decades of service and leadership. Her contribution to our organisation and the older adult mental health community has been immeasurable. Marianne has been a guiding force on Malvern Ward and leaves behind a legacy of excellence that will continue to inspire the entire team. We wish her a well-deserved and happy retirement.”

As Marianne prepares for this new chapter in life, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, professionalism, and a dedication to improving the lives of people facing mental health challenges. Their impact will continue to resonate within the team and the patients they have cared for over the years.
