Several passionate students from Ormiston SWB Academy, including Year 9 student, Andrew Pecincu-Holban, and Year 13 student, Anita Chopra, have been selected to represent their local community after a rigorous election process to become new Youth Councillors.

The Youth Council provides an exciting opportunity for young people to have their voices heard, contribute to community initiatives, and influence key decisions affecting their peers.

The successful candidates were officially announced at a celebratory event in the Council Chamber, where they were welcomed by city leaders including the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Cllr Linda Lead; the Leader of the Council, Cllr Stephen Simkins; Director of Children’s Services, Alison Hinds, and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, Cllr Jacqui Coogan.

As part of their roles, the passionate young representatives will work alongside city councillors, contribute to regional and national initiatives and support Wolverhampton’s two Youth MPs as part of their dedication to social action and their community. They will also play an instrumental role in campaigns such as My Tomorrow, a youth-led initiative on crime prevention.

The participation of Ormiston SWB Academy students reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to nurturing leadership, civic responsibility and personal development among its students.

Andrew and Anita’s involvement in the Youth Council is a key opportunity to develop vital life and employability skills such as communication, teamwork and public engagement – helping them grow as young leaders. Their involvement is set to bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and a real commitment to creating change for young people across Wolverhampton.

Dan Mason, Headteacher at Ormiston SWB Academy said: “Andrew and Anita have shown incredible enthusiasm and passion for representing their peers on the Youth Council - we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements. At Ormiston SWB Academy, we believe in empowering our young people with the opportunities to lead, make an impact, and develop the skills they need for a bright future as responsible citizens.”

Joe Bradley, Head of Enrichment at Ormiston Academies Trust added: “At Ormiston, we are committed to ensuring that our students have access to the best opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Seeing our students step up to take on leadership roles in the Youth Council is truly inspiring. They are developing invaluable skills that will serve them well in their future careers and as active citizens.”
