To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, Spire Little Aston Hospital commemorated colleagues who successfully completed an apprenticeship in 2024. Throughout the week, Spire Healthcare provided virtual events for colleagues across Spire’s 39 hospitals and 50 clinics to join, including sessions on apprenticeships at Spire, success stories and a graduation celebration hosted by Justin Ash, CEO of Spire Healthcare.
At Spire Little Aston Hospital, a total of seven colleagues completed an apprenticeship in 2024. These included the following courses: LEAP 5 operations/department manager, LEAP 3 team leader, level 3 senior healthcare support worker, operating department practitioner and CIPD level 5 HR. By completing apprenticeships, colleagues are able to make exceptional contributions to their hospital, consequently providing outstanding care.
In 2024, 114 colleagues achieved their apprenticeship and 105 staff members began an apprenticeship. In 2025, Spire Healthcare has approximately 340 apprentices across the country in both clinical and non-clinical roles. Spire conduct one of the largest nurse apprenticeship programmes operated by any single organisation in the country, and numerous graduates from the programme go on to work in the NHS. In addition to this, Spire have apprenticeships in biomedical science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, medical laboratory technicians, as well as non-clinical disciplines. Alongside apprenticeship programmes, several other training opportunities and student placements are offered at Spire.
Ed Ireland, Hospital Director at Spire Little Aston Hospital, said: “We are incredibly proud of our apprenticeship training programmes and are aiming through our continued investment in these programmes, to build a talent pipeline for our business and the broader healthcare sector. Importantly, these programmes contribute to the sustainability of the whole healthcare sector in the UK, because many of our graduates will go on to careers in the NHS and elsewhere – something we’re proud of as a net contributor to society”.
