Darren Moore: Aston Villa have momentum but West Brom will be 'quietly confident'

Darren Moore reckons Albion will be ‘quietly confident’ going into the play-off semi-final – even if Aston Villa do have the momentum.

The former Baggies boss believes his old side have enough experienced heads in the dressing room to deal with the fiery atmosphere of back-to-back derbies.

But he thinks it will be a tight contest decided by one moment of brilliance.

“I think the (Albion) team will be fine,” Moore told Sky Sports. “They’re a great group of players.

“They will be quietly confident at this stage of the season. The boys will be looking forward to it.

“They will feel they’ve got enough. There are some experienced boys in there, who know now is the time to be at your best.

“I’m sure Jimmy (Shan) will get them together, and they’re looking forward to this game.”

Moore beat Villa boss Dean Smith to the Albion job last summer, but he admitted the former Walsall manager had got his current club on song ahead of the play-offs.

“Villa will feel they’ve got real momentum going into this game and they’ll want to continue doing what they’re doing,” said Moore.

“They’ve got wonderful flair and balance, they’re scoring goals and keeping it tight at the back.

“It’s a local derby so both clubs know each other very well, both have exceptional players. I envisage both games will be tightly fought contests decided by a moment of brilliance.”

Albion are the only relegated side still with a chance of bouncing straight back up with both Stoke and Swansea finishing outside of the top six.

“It’s difficult in the Championship, it’s very different in terms of the fixtures,” said Moore. “West Brom have done really well to get to this stage of the season.

"They’ve got one foot in the door, there is still work to be done but they’re in with a chance like the other three teams.”
