Wolves fans hit out at plan to scrap 'iconic' subway

The city council's top boss Tim Johnson revealed this week the desire to get rid of the subway which runs under the ring road and has been used by fans on matchdays for decades.

Mr Johnson described the underpass as "horrible" but the move has been criticised by some Wolves fans who said the subway was part of the fabric of a Wolves matchday, with one labelling it "iconic".

Both Wolves and the council are keen to improve links between Molineux and the city centre to create a more inviting journey for supporters and families. It's thought any changes concerning the subway would be tied in with the wider redevelopment of Molineux, which could start next year and could eventually result in the stadium's capacity increasing to around 50,000.

But it has already been shown the removal of the subway would be contentious among some sections of the fanbase.

The possible removal of the subway has once again raised the prospect of a bridge being built over the ring road.

Dozens of supporters shared their views on the Express & Star's Facebook page.

Ian Morgan said: "Why can’t Wolverhampton keep some of these fantastic landmarks? The council should be going out of their way to preserve this, it’s a big part of the town and has been for years and years."

James Wainwright said: "Keep the subway and build a bridge as it gets rammed and will only get busier with stadium expansion. Got to keep the Subway though as (it is) atmospheric and part of our history."

Joolz Price said simply: "Subway is part of the Molineux's history."

Ed Hague-Sanders said: "Not a fan of this. The subway has become part of the matchday “routine” for me over the past couple of years."

Another said on Twitter: "One of my first (and best) memories of visiting the molineux would be the walk under the subway before and after the game singing songs with other wolves fans, would be a shame for future generations not to experience it."

But support for the subway was not unanimous among Wolves fans.

Mark Clews said on Twitter: It’s a subway. Get over it, surely redevelopment is more important."
