Southampton 3 Wolves 1 – player ratings

Rui Patricio

Wolves conceded three times but you couldn't really look at Patricio for any of them. He's had absolutely no protection from a leaky defence and indeed helped keep the score down, especially with an excellent save from point blank range to deny Yoshida shortly after Southampton's third goal. 7/10

Romain Saiss

He's played exceptionally well at times in recent weeks, notably against Chelsea and Manchester United, but this kind of performance makes you wonder if Saiss is the long-term answer at right centre-half. In a word, dozy. Especially in the first half when he allowed Redmond to sneak across him for the first goal and also sloppily conceded possession on a number of occasions. 4/10

Conor Coady

Wolves' biggest problem in the first half was that the back five were positioned too far away from each other, allowing big holes for Southampton to exploit. This left Coady isolated and he was caught playing Redmond onside for the second goal during a defensive performance that lacked control. As chief organiser at the back, he must take a fair share of blame for Wolves' poorest defensive display of the season. 4/10

Willy Boly

A beautifully planted header from Boly, his fourth goal of the season, drew Wolves level for a couple of minutes. Won nine headers (more than double anyone else on the pitch), but was also guilty of the basic errors that his team mates were producing. One dithering clearance almost led to a fourth Southampton goal. 5/10

Matt Doherty

Got forward to good effect at times in the first half but lacked the decisive final pass or shot, as they all did. Couldn't really be blamed for the defensive calamities unfolding to his left hand side. Taken off early in the second half as Nuno looked to inject some pace in the form of Adama Traore. 5/10

Joao Moutinho

Tried to get Wolves going in the second half but it just didn't happen. Plenty of effort and endeavour from the midfield maestro and his corners, once he finally stopped playing them short (yes they scored from one against Watford but it was an unnecessary change to a formula that has been working) he whipped them in for fun. This was Wolves' best source of a goal – and so it proved when Boly headed home from an outswinger. 6/10

Ruben Neves

So deep he needed a snorkel. Was playing footsie with the centre-halves for most of the first half – yes Wolves need a fulcrum but this guy needs to be further up the pitch seen as he's the best passer of a football we've seen at Molineux for at least a couple of decades. As against Watford he had an off day. Almost cost a goal when he carelessly gave the ball away just after Southampton's second. Had four shots, more than any of his team mates, but couldn't find the target. Indeed he hasn't found the net from open play in the league this season, which he'll be disappointed with. 5/10

Leander Dendoncker

Almost netted with a powerful 12-yard header in the first half and generally got in the box to good effect albeit without that final finishing touch. Regularly won the ball back but didn't do enough with it. 6/10

Jonny Castro Otto

Both he and Boly were caught out when Sims got in behind them for the first goal. Helped carve out a couple of half chances in the first period. Faded after the break and it was a surprise Vinagre didn't replace him to help stretch the play down the left. 5/10

Raul Jimenez

Apart from the goal Wolves created only one clear cut chance all afternoon – and Jimenez blew it. With the score at 2-1 the ball dropped on his right boot for a first-time volley from just eight yards, but he shanked it wide for a throw in, adequately summing up Wolves' day. A minute later it was 3-1 and game over. A couple of nice link-up moments with Jota in the first half but otherwise this was a rare poor performance from the Mexican. 5/10

Diogo Jota

Full of attacking intent and looked to spark Wolves to life with his strike partner Jimenez. Embarked on a couple of jinking runs in the first half and was Wolves' biggest threat. However after the break he did next to nothing, save for a shot on the turn from 12 yards which he blazed over the bar. 6/10

Substitutes

Adama Traore (for Doherty, 60)

Sent on to cause havoc and he did that on a couple of occasions, twice taking on two players at a time and sending over a decent cross or two. Southampton quickly got wise to this and put three players on him. But then Traore contrived to produce the kind of defensive blunder you'd expect to see on the playground, not in a Premier League match. Dopily stood motionless and watched as his team mates advanced three yards ahead of him, while Traore stupidly played Long onside for Southampton's third. Desperately poor. 5/10

Morgan Gibbs-White (for Neves, 70)

Only 11 touches of the ball. The game was gone at this point. 5/10
