Wolves v Manchester United: The expert take on the Red Devils

We spoke with Liam Corless, football writer for the Manchester Evening News, to get his take on the game at Molineux.

Obviously Wolves are coming off their FA Cup victory over United last month, what did you make of that encounter?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the mistake of playing several players who weren’t fully fit in the cup game and United were made to pay.

They never got going and Wolves were well worth their win.

United couldn’t deal with their counter-attacking threat and probably didn’t even deserve their late consolation goal, scored by Marcus Rashford.

Back to this meeting in the league, will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have that previous game in his thinking?

Solskjaer came in for criticism for not matching Wolves’ three-at-the-back formation last month so that is perhaps something he will consider on Tuesday night.

Every game is different though and he won’t want to dwell too much on past results.

How do you expect United to line up against Wolves? What's your predicted XI?

The personnel likely won’t be too different to the cup game.

David de Gea will come in for Sergio Romero and Phil Jones deserves to keep his place in the team after his performance against Watford on Saturday.

If Solskjaer does go with three at the back, I’d wager his line-up will be something a little like this:

De Gea; Smalling, Jones, Lindelof; Dalot, Herrera, Matic, Shaw; Pogba; Rashford, Martial

Are there any injury worries ahead of the game?

Eric Bailly, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Alexis Sanchez are all out.

Solskjaer has confirmed Victor Lindelof will play after he missed the game against Watford for personal reasons, while Anthony Martial is also available after coming off injured at the weekend.

How important is it that United finish in the top four this season having exited the FA Cup now - will they have a renewed sense of having to win their remaining games?

Finishing in the top four represents United’s best chance of getting back into the Champions League - especially given the tricky quarter-final draw they have been handed in this season’s competition.

Qualification for the tournament will be massive when it comes to attracting their top transfer targets in the summer.

As for having to win every game, I don’t think that will be the case because Chelsea are inconsistent and Spurs are having a dreadful time of it at the moment.

Arsenal are probably best positioned to finish third as they don’t have to play any other top-six side between now and the end of the season, so it could be a shoot-out between United, Spurs and Chelsea for fourth.

What have you made of Wolves this season, do you think they're good enough to finish best of the rest?

As Solskjaer said over the weekend, Watford and Wolves are the best teams in the league outside the top six.

Wolves are definitely capable of finishing seventh but they’ve got a tricky run-in with games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool all still to come.

Watford, Everton, Leicester and perhaps even West Ham could still come into the equation.

Your match prediction?

If United play like they did against Watford they’ll lose.

There has been a bit of a hangover from the comeback against PSG but that won’t continue forever.

I’m predicting a score draw.
