Ikeme has been a regular spectator of Nuno Espirito Santo's high-flying team this season.

Wolves are seventh in the Premier League and also hopeful of a run in the FA Cup.

Ikeme, speaking at the Cleveland Arms where he was appearing with ex-team mate Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, told the Express & Star it was a hugely exciting time for the club – but fans perhaps shouldn't start to dust off their passports just yet.

"It's a thrilling ride and we're all kind of in a bubble, but it's real at the same time," he told the Express & Star.

"It's exciting to see everything going on for a club that's had difficult times – and in the city too.

"I joined Wolves when I was 14 so to see everyone talking about our club in this way is pretty amazing.

"We've seen it happen to other clubs so to be a part of it and watch the progress is great.

"The owners are very ambitious. Even though the squad is hugely talented I think we're over-achieving a bit, not by a lot.

"It's important to try and keep a lid on things - a lot of fans are getting their passports ready! And it's brilliant to know Europe is a possibility.

"I love the vision of everyone at the club and they are striving for excellence."

Ikeme, who retired from football last summer after battling leukaemia, is in touch with many of the current players and says he's a "proud older brother" watching their success unfold.

He added: "Everything has changed behind the scenes - I wasn't at Wolves for a year and it changed massively.

"They're really ambitious and successful in what they do in their other businesses, plus they've got the financial power to do it.

"It's a project that's interesting to watch and fulfilling to see players I know doing so well, I'm proud of Coads, Doherty, Costa, Morgan Gibbs-White, I'm happy to see them doing so well.

"Doherty could arguably be the best players of the season, Coads is knocking on the England door, I don't want to intensify the Gibbs-White hype but there's a lot of talk about him.

"I'm sort of like a proud older brother watching them do well."

The night raised hundreds of pounds for charity Race Against Blood Cancer.
