The boy, thought to be Tom Aitchison, was ordered to leave the pitch after taking matters into his own hands as Hull staff took their time to retrieve the ball.

His actions earned the acclaim of the Wolves fans, who gave him a big cheer, and supporters took to social media to back him after the match, which ended 2-2.

The club has confirmed the ball boy has not been sacked following the incident.

Claire Fanthom said on Facebook: “I just want to say how humbled and overwhelmed with all the support you’ve shown my son over these past couple of days! You should all be proud of yourselves for the kindness you have shown him!

“He loves being a ball boy at Wolves. As you can imagine I’m one proud mum at the moment.”

Ms Fanthom praised Wolves managing director Laurie Dalrymple for the handling of the incident after it was confirmed her son would return to his ball boy duties.

She said: “I have high respect for Laurie too for dealing with the situation the way he did.”
