Jon Flatt is back to help Wolves under-23s win in cup
Wolves Under-23s boss Scott Sellars spoke of his delight as his youngsters progressed through to the last eight of the Premier League Cup on penalties.
Sellars’ boys beat an experienced Exeter side on penalties after the game finished finished 1-1 following extra-time.
Keeper Jon Flatt was the hero, saving two spot-kicks as Wolves beat Exeter 3-1 at Compton Park.
Both sides had already missed one kick each when Flatt denied Will Dean. Boubacar Hanne took advantage to put Wolves 2-1 up.
Flatt then saved from Ben Seymour, allowing Anthony Breslin to secure Wolves’ place in the last eight.
In normal time Robbie Simpson headed Exeter – who named several league regulars in their XI – into a first-half lead and Swiss youth international Yang Ming-Yang Yang equalised in the 73rd minute for Sellars’ side.
The boss said: “I’m delighted for the boys.
“I thought over the 90 minutes and extra-time we were the better team and created the better chances.
“I couldn’t really fault the lads at all for their performance (although) probably a little bit in the first half, I thought we had some good chances and situations where we could have done better and probably the second half, not as many, but we had some good situations and the right pass at the right time could have made it comfortable.
“We saw Exeter’s team before the game and it was a very experienced team and a lot of lads with first team experience, so we knew it was going to be tough.
“But I thought the lads really got on with it from the start, took responsibility and to play in a game like that and keep going and going and keep creating chances, and to go 1-0 down as well, I thought the boys showed a lot of character.”
“Penalties are never easy and some of them were cramping up. They don’t often play as long as that.
“We’ve had a few shoot-outs over the past few years and we always talk about being calm and having that deep breath, picking a corner and not changing your mind.”
Wolverhampton-born keeper Flatt has been on loan with Cheltenham Town and Kidderminster Harriers this season, but is now back at Wolves where he’s fighting for a long-term future at the club
Sellars said of the 23-year-old: “We did what we had to and Flatty did his job as well and made a couple of great saves.
“Every competition with Jon, we always know he’s really good on penalties so it gives us a chance.
“A cup competition gives us another game – we’re always talking about more games at this level.
“I definitely felt there was an edge to it, there was a proper cup tie feel, so hopefully another game like that.”
