Greater Manchester Police (GMP) enforced 'significant road closures' due to the severity of the blaze, and asked both Wolves and City fans to give themselves extra time to get to the game.

It said in a statement: "There are significant road closures in place nearby and we would ask people to avoid the area while firefighters tackle the blaze.

"Police are working closely with the fire service and Transport for Greater Manchester to try to minimise the impact on those travelling as much as possible.

"Anyone attending the Man City vs Wolves fixture at the Etihad Stadium tonight is advised to use public transport where possible and allow extra time for travelling to the game.
