Clean sweep of awards for West Brom's Sam Johnstone
Sam Johnstone swept the board as Albion announced their end of the season awards – on the same day the keeper was named in the provisional England squad for the European Championships.
Despite the Baggies being relegated from the Premier League, Johnstone has enjoyed a fantastic season between the posts.
And that form has been rewarded in style with three club awards.
Johnstone was crowned Albion’s Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season.
He was also recognised by The Albion Foundation for his stellar work off of the pitch by winning the PFA Community Champion Award.
“I’m delighted and very proud to be given these awards,” Johnstone said.
“It means so much when it comes from your squad, the fans and of course our fantastic Foundation.
“The last year has been a big learning curve for me, going up against some of the best players in the world, and to receive recognition at the end of it is a big boost.”
Johnstone’s awards came on the same day he was named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the European Championships.
And the goalkeeper now looks likely to make the final cut after Nick Pope missed out on a call up due to needing surgery.
Johnstone will compete with Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and boyhood Albion fan Aaron Ramsdale to be one of three keepers in Southgate’s final 26 man squad.
But with Ramsdale having never been named in a senior squad before, it is highly likely Johnstone will get the nod along with Pickford and Henderson.
Meanwhile, former Albion assistant boss Graeme Jones has been added to England’s coaching team at the European Championship this summer.
Jones – who is now on the staff at Newcastle – will remain with the Three Lions for the duration of the tournament.
