Aston Villa 2 West Brom 2 - Albion player ratings

Joe Masi rates the Albion players following the 2-2 draw at Villa Park.

Published

Sam Johnstone

The former Villa loanee had fond times at Villa Park, but he couldn’t keep a clean sheet in this one. Went the wrong way for El Ghazi’s opener. But did well until late indecision between him and Bartley cost an equaliser. String of saves stopped a winner.

One slip-up 7

Darnell Furlong

Did his best to try and limit a left-sided Villa attack that produced the most threat from the hosts. Didn’t see enough of his ability to deliver into the box, but with Pereira pulling the strings in front of him was probably more focused on defending.

Mixed 6

Kyle Bartley

Making his 100th appearance for Albion, Bartley has been a commanding presence for the side. Was brilliant right until added time when his indecision allowed Keinan Davis his equaliser.

Switched off 6

Semi Ajayi

Brought into the XI as Big Sam made the move to go back to four at the back. Endured a nightmare start when he clumsily bundled Ross Barkley over in the box. Did well to recover from that, didn’t have a part in the error which handed Villa their late equaliser.

Clumsy challenge 6

Conor Townsend

Did well to keep hold of Bertrand Traore, but didn’t offer too much going forward. Defensively very sound though, Villa players didn’t get much change from him until Ollie Watkins set up Davis after outjumping the full-back. A performance we’ve become accustomed to.

Strong 7

Okay Yokuslu

Coming off what was his first poor game for Albion against Leicester, Yokuslu did his best to try and keep Villa quiet. Composed, strong and indefatigable, Yokuslu was right back to his best at Villa Park. A very well-rounded performance from the Turk.

Bounced back 7

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Didn’t see much of the ball before winning his side a penalty, albeit with seemingly minimal contact from Ezri Konsa. Put in a good shift and did lots of work defensively, brought off as Big Sam shored up in the dying minutes.

Hard-working 7

Conor Gallagher

A trademark showing of energy and hard work from the Chelsea loanee after being brought back into the side. Did his best to get Albion moving forward and put in his fair share of defensive work too. Deserves to keep his place.

Busy 7

Callum Robinson

Struggled to get himself into the game early on, but did put in a shift and tried to get involved. Has been something of a spark for the Baggies recently, but didn’t have any serious say in this one before being replaced by Matt Phillips.

Quiet 5

Mbaye Diagne

Didn’t have a sniff first half, but played a telling role in the second period. Saw his strike deflect past Martinez off Mings to give Albion a 2-1 lead, will be annoyed to see it credited as an own goal, but it was off-target.

Physical 6

Matheus Pereira

A performance that really deserved three points. Took his opportunity from the spot and was a constant threat with the ball at his feet – summed up perfectly by a brilliant piece of skill to escape Luiz late in the first half. Set pieces were brilliant.

Deserved more 9

Substitutes

Matt Phillips (for Robinson, 66) Came on for Robinson just after the hour mark. Didn’t get too involved. 5; Dara O’Shea (for Maitland-Niles, 86) Brought into the fray to try and hold out for three points. A tactic which was thwarted by Keinan Davis’ late goal. Subs not used: Button, Peltier, Livermore, Sawyers, Diangana, Grant, Robson Kanu.
