Callum Morton wants game-time at West Brom or with another temporary switch

But while forcing his way into the Baggies’ first-team is the ultimate goal for Callum Morton, the striker isn’t against going out on loan again next season.

The 22-year-old is currently enjoying a temporary spell with Lincoln having previously shone for Northampton during the 2019/20 campaign.

Morton scored five goals in nine outings to fire the Cobbers to promotion last year.

He has scored three times in 13 outings for Michael Appleton’s Imps – but his season has been heavily impacted by a shoulder injury which kept him out for five months.

A player who always gives his all, Morton’s impressive performances over the last two years have led to Albion fans wondering when they will see him in the famous blue and white stripes.

But Morton says he will talk to the club about his future at the end of the current campaign.

“That’s a conversation for the summer with the relevant people so we can see where I am at with my football,” he said.

“It also depends how well I do at Lincoln between now and the end of the season because if I do as well as I did last season, the Championship would be the next natural progression.

“But I wouldn’t be content with being another number in a match day squad so I think if me playing regular minutes would mean going out on loan again, then it would be a sensible option to take.

“Getting chucked into a changing room full of professionals of different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles has definitely been an eye-opener for me.

“You see a lot of young players like yourself but then you see older players with kids and families.

“Then in terms of the style of play at clubs, there is a shift between West Brom, Northampton and Lincoln.

“They all play in a different way and experiencing that helps you adapt to different challenges and situations.

“You want to have that under your belt because there could be different managers coming in whatever club you are at so knowing how to play in different styles is ideal.”

Prior to his spells with Northampton and Lincoln, Morton had a loan stint with Braintree in non-league.

“As soon as I got to the level where I thought I could go out on loan, that became my aim,” the 21-year-old continued.

“Some people would probably turn their nose up at Braintree – they would want something close to home, more comfortable or a better league.

“But my aim was to get out and play as much as possible and try and make an impact. A lot of people are comfortable sitting in the under-23s. But if you want to get as high as possible, that isn’t the mentality to have.”
