West Brom winger Matt Phillips looks to build on Chelsea stunner

The Baggies shocked everyone on Saturday by securing a thumping 5-2 victory over Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Nobody would have predicted that scoreline – with the hosts previously unbeaten under their German boss.

Nevertheless, Albion entered the clash on the back of impressive performances against the likes of Manchester United, Burnley, Everton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.

A lack of cutting edge in those fixtures ultimately meant they didn’t get the results they deserved.

But Phillips believes a win was coming, even if he wasn’t expecting Albion to put five past Chelsea.

“We are a team who hasn’t scored too many goals this season so to get five was (a surprise),” he said. “Scoring five goals at Stamford Bridge doesn’t happen too often. But we had three weeks in between games and we worked hard. There was no slack or resting.

“Results hadn’t been going for us but we have definitely stepped it up. We are playing better stuff. We are always in games.

“If we can be as clinical as we were at Chelsea in the remaining games then who knows?

“While there is still a chance we are going to try and win as many games as we can and see if we can stay up.”

Meanwhile, Albion loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles has decided his long-term future lies away from Arsenal according to reports.

The 23-year-old had made it clear he wants to play in central midfield with the Gunners having tended to deploy him at right-back.

And after enjoying his time at The Hawthorns, multiple news outlets have reported Maitland-Niles is ready to leave Arsenal for good.

That is likely to spark a scramble for his signature with a host of clubs understood to be keen on the England international.

Leicester, Southampton and Newcastle all expressed an interest in signing Maitland-Niles back in January.

Wolves also came close to landing the London-born star last summer, while Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest.

Arsenal’s asking price for Maitland-Niles is likely to be at least £20million – with that fee making it unlikely he will return to Albion, even if they do stay in the Premier League.
