West Brom forward Callum Robinson hopes to impress while on Republic duty

The striker is all set for a busy week with the Republic, who face Serbia in a World Cup qualifier tomorrow before taking on Luxembourg on Saturday and Qatar next Tuesday.

A regular starter for the Baggies in the first-half of the campaign, Robinson has seen his playing time reduced ever since the arrival of Mbaye Diagne.

The 26-year-old has been an unused substitute in Albion’s last seven games.

That, though, didn’t stop manager Stephen Kenny from naming him in his Republic of Ireland squad.

And despite his lack of playing time, Robinson says he is fit and determined to show how good he is.

“The manager (Kenny) has picked me with the lack of minutes,” he said.

“Hopefully that’s down to him knowing what I can do and how I can help the team. I want to get us to the World Cup.

“There’s been no fallout there (at Albion). It’s just how it is, you know what football’s like, sometimes you’re in and sometimes you aren’t.

“I just made sure that I’ve trained as hard as I can, as hard as possible to make sure that I was fit enough to come on this trip and be there for selection.

“It’s just how it goes sometimes in football, at the moment I’m obviously not in the team – I don’t want to not be in the team, I want to be playing and helping the lads but that’s obviously Big Sam’s choice at the moment and I’ve just got to keep grafting away.

“The lads have done OK, obviously we’ve not done really well in the last few games but before that, the lads picked up a good amount of points.

“We beat Brighton, they got a good result against (Manchester) United at home.

“Sometimes you have to bide your time.

“I played a lot of minutes previous to that and under him (Allardyce) as well, all over the Christmas period I had a lot of minutes.

“Obviously it’s annoying for me, I want to be out there playing and enjoying it as any professional would but at the moment I’m just having to bide my time.”

Robinson has been joined in the Republic of Ireland squad by Albion team-mate Dara O’Shea.

It’s only the third time the 22-year-old has been called into the senior side.

But now he has made the breakthrough, Robinson expects the defender to have a long international career.

“Dara’s the sort of player I knew would be able to adapt to international football,” Robinson added.

“It’s just the way he plays – he’s a calm player, confident in himself as well, which is good. I can only see him getting better.

“He just needs to keep working hard as he always does and just concentrating on one thing – playing football and loving it.

“That’s what he’s been doing this season and fair play to him he’s had a really good season, especially for his age.”
