Sam Allardyce: West Brom faltered in front of goal

Sam Allardyce once again bemoaned his side’s lack of cutting edge after Albion were beaten at Palace.

A penalty from Luka Milivojevic was enough to earn all three points for Roy Hodgson's side in a game that severely lacked attacking quality at Selhurst Park.

The Baggies were the better team overall but they only really created half-chances over the course of the 90 minutes.

That has been the story for Allardyce’s side over the past few weeks with his team putting in impressive displays against the likes of Manchester United, Burnley, Everton and Newcastle without getting the points they deserve.

And the boss admitted, going forward, his team just haven’t been good enough.

“It’s the same as the last eight or nine games - we faltered in front of goal again,” Allardyce said.

“We faltered in front of goal and didn’t get one point let alone three points.

“We gave away a silly penalty that we can ill afford to do, based on our ratio of goals scored, per game.

“It’s a great shame because our chances created, our opportunities created, in the opposition box were there.

“But our finishing again is not up to scratch - not just when it comes to scoring goals but just hitting the target.

“We have had 12 attempts on goal and only one on target which shows you the massive problem we have.

“That’s a great shame based on the consistent performances the lads have given us over the last eight, nine or 10 games.

“We have to hold our hands up. That is our downfall and that is why we aren’t a lot closer to the teams above us.”

The defeat means - with just nine games remaining - Albion sit eight points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference.

Asked if the Baggies can still survive, Allardyce said: “If we win six out of nine, yes.”
