Kyle Bartley's goal proved enough in an entertaining encounter at The Hawthorns.
The game was not without its controversy, with referee Lee Mason disallowing a Lewis Dunk free kick, before then awarding the goal only for the decision to be overturned once again.
Brighton also saw two spot kicks hit the woodwork as they spurned a number of chances to level.
