West Brom winger Kamil Grosicki ‘in talks on early end to contract’

Last week the winger was warned by Zbigniew Boniek – the head of the Polish Football Association – that his place in the national side for this summer’s European Championships was under threat if he doesn’t start to play regularly.

In what has been a frustrating season for Grosicki, both he and Charlie Austin were frozen out by former boss Slaven Bilic and told to train with Albion’s under-23s.

With results disappointing, both players managed to work themselves back into contention.

Grosicki then got a chance to impress new head coach Sam Allardyce when he started the Premier League matches against Wolves and West Ham.

The winger put in steady performances in both games.

But shortly after, Allardyce confirmed he would be willing to listen to offers for the 32-year-old – who hasn’t featured in a match day squad since.

The Express & Star understands Grosicki earns in the region of £35,000-a-week at The Hawthorns.

Those wages have been a stumbling block for his departure with a host of European clubs understood to be interested in the former Hull City man but unable to match those terms.

Now, though, it has been reported Grosicki would be willing to lower his wages demands if he received a pay-off from Albion.

That would allow the two parties to mutually terminate his contract – meaning, as a free agent, Grosicki would have until mid-March to find a new club.

Signed from Hull in January last year, Grosicki arrived at The Hawthorns hoping to help the club to promotion with the aim of then proving himself in the Premier League.

He was made available transfer in the summer but – after being told he would not feature – agreed a deadline day move to Nottingham Forest.

That transfer collapsed, though, after the Championship side submitted the paperwork for the deal 21 seconds too late.

Forest again tried to sign Grosicki in January.

But the winger turned down the move in the hope he could impress Allardyce and win a place in Albion’s first-team.

Now though, following Boniek’s comments, the Poland international knows he needs to start playing games.

“Kamil does not play and it saddens me, because this is how the team for 2020/21 moves away from the project,” Boniek said last week.

“Grosiki is a symbol of the staff in the last six to eight years.

“But the representation must include players who are in shape and who play every day.”
