Kyle Bartley: West Brom showed they can take on United

The Baggies fell to 1-0 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams back in November in a match that was marred by VAR controversy.

Albion were hugely unfortunate not to be given a spot-kick when Bruno Fernandes caught Conor Gallagher in the box.

Referee David Coote awarded a penalty. But after VAR officials told him to look at the incident again on his pitch-side monitor, he overturned his decision.

Afterwards, though, a host of pundits and former players – including United legend Rio Ferdinand – said the penalty should have stood.

To compound Albion's misery, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side then won the game when they were awarded a spot-kick of their own.

Fernandes saw his effort saved by Sam Johnstone. But VAR said the keeper had strayed from his line with the Portuguese midfielder scoring the re-take.

Albion have managed to secure some decent results against the Premier League's big hitters this season with the Baggies drawing at both Liverpool and Manchester City.

And Bartley feels those performances – together with their display at Old Trafford – proved they can get a result against United on Sunday.

“If you look at our performances this year, bar a couple, we’ve given the so-called big teams a good game,” he said.

“We drew at Anfield, drew at the Etihad, and at Old Trafford we were really unlucky not to get anything.

“So we’ll go into this game knowing that if we perform to the best of our abilities, obviously we’ll need a little bit of luck, but we can definitely get a result."

Albion fell to a 2-0 loss at Tottenham last weekend.

But having watched the game back, Bartley feels there were positives to take from the Spurs match despite the result.

“It was obviously disappointing not to get anything out of the Spurs game," he continued.

"But looking back and watching some of the video with the manager and the staff -–there were positives to take out of it.

“We need to get points on the board, we’re fully aware of that, but we need to remain positive, keep striving in the right direction and stay together.

“We need to go out there and show everybody what we can do. Everybody here believes and I think that’s the main thing.”
