The 27-year-old dislodged former England international Kieran Gibbs to become the Baggies first-choice left-back last season.

This year he has seen his campaign hampered by injures.

But after returning to full fitness, he has again dislodged Gibbs to return to the side and now looks set to be a key player for the rest of the campaign.

Townsend’s previous deal was due to expire this summer.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here at West Brom and I was very keen to extend my stay,” the full-back said.

“We had been talking about it for a while and then I got injured.

“It wasn’t a worrying time, but I just wanted to get it done as soon as possible.

“It’s my third season here now and I feel I have improved every single year.

“That’s come from working hard every day, even when I wasn’t getting a look-in.

“I kept working hard and I kept trying to do the right things.

“Now that’s paying dividends on a personal level with my performances.

“I think I’ve done okay so far this year. I still think I can do better and I do feel as though there is more to come.”

Luke Dowling, Albion’s technical director, added: “We’re delighted to have secured Conor’s services for another three years.

“It’s clear to see the improvements Conor has made during his time here and he has become an integral part of this squad.

“We are happy he has committed his future to us and we’re excited to witness his continued development here at The Hawthorns.”
