Sam Johnstone

Albion’s goalkeeper showed his quality with a superb reflex stop to deny Serge Aurier. Johnstone also made a number of routine saves. But he was powerless to prevent both goals with his defence leaving him woefully exposed each time.

Steady 6

Lee Peltier

A surprise inclusion ahead of Dara O’Shea and Darnell Furlong, Peltier defended well at times but looked off the pace and was caught behind the play on other occasions.

Mixed show 5

Semi Ajayi

Another inconsistent display from the centre-back who looks short on confidence. Ajayi has all the tools to perform at this level but lets himself down with silly mistakes.

Inconsistent 5

Kyle Bartley

Another decent-ish display from Bartley who defended well overall. Tottenham’s second goal, though, came from a counter-attack that would have been stopped if he had picked up a tactical yellow card on half-way.

Fairly solid 6

Conor Townsend

Now comfortably ahead of Kieran Gibbs as Albion’s best left-back, Townsend whipped in some dangerous crosses and defended well both in the air and on the ground.

Impressive 7

Romaine Sawyers

Another afternoon where the boyhood Baggie struggled. Sawyers, very simply, isn’t a holding midfielder and needs to be utilised further forward.

Struggled 4

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

It feels as though a lot rests on the Arsenal loanee if Albion are to survive. But he failed to make any kind of impact on his debut – with the England international largely anonymous.

Disappointing 5

Conor Gallagher

The Chelsea loanee showed his trademark energy and broke up play well at times. But his form under Sam Allardyce just hasn’t been what it was under Slaven Bilic.

Disciplined 6

Robert Snodgrass

Back on the right wing, Snodgrass showed his quality with a couple of excellent crosses which Mbaye Diagne got on the end of. Also worked hard to break up play and try and get his team up the pitch.

Dangerous 6

Karlan Grant

Utilised on the left of a front three, Grant ran his socks off with his defensive work excellent. He just offered next to nothing going forward.

Grafted 5

Mbaye Diagne

The striker forced Huge Lloris into an excellent save with one header and also saw two efforts ruled out for offside. He should have read both of those situations better. But this was still an encouraging display – with the overall feeling that Diagane will get goals.

Encouraging 6

Substitutes

Matt Phillips (for Grant, 68) 5, Okay Yokuslu (for Sawyers 78) 6, Matheus Pereira (for Snodgrass, 80) 6.

Subs not used: Button, Furlong, O’Shea, Livermore, Robinson, Robson-Kanu.
