The Baggies, who face Fulham in a crucial relegation six-pointer tomorrow, are working to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes on Monday.

The club are closing in on a loan move for striker Mbaye Diagne after agreeing terms with Turkish-side Galatasaray.

Albion have also been linked with move for Celta Vigo's defensive midfielder Okay Yokuslu.

The Baggies – who signed Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea in the summer – still have one domestic loan available to them.

And they are hoping to fill that slot with versatile England international Maitland-Niles.

Able to play at full-back, wing-back and in midfield, the 23-year-old almost joined Wolves in the summer only for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to convince him to stay.

Since then, though, Maitland-Niles has struggled for minutes with Arteta admitting he is frustrated at his lack of playing time – especially with the European Championships scheduled to take place this summer.

"Yes, it is a concern when there is international football involved as well and the chance to reach that opportunity," Arteta said.

"I understand that Ainsley wants more minutes and what he needs to do is fight, train and challenge his teammates and show us that he can be one of our starters."

According to reports, Albion boss Sam Allardyce is pushing hard to sign Maitland-Niles this window.

But Arsenal have some reservations about sending him to a side embroiled in a relegation scrap.

Other Premier League sides, including one currently in the top four, also said to be showing an interest in the England man.
