David Button

Albion’s back-up keeper gave the team a huge opportunity to win the game by saving the first penalty in the shoot-out.

You can’t help but wonder, though, if Sam Johnstone would have stopped Gary Madine’s strike.

Steady 6

Lee Peltier

A solid performance from the defender who was strong in the air and produced a couple of crunching tackles.

Switched from right-back to left-back at half-time and again stuck to his task fairly well.

Solid 6

Kyle Bartley

Still working his way back from injury, Bartley looked far too casual as Blackpool scored their opener.

Needs to quickly find his sharpness.

Disappointing 4

Branislav Ivanovic

Another game where the former Chelsea man struggled – this time against League One opposition.

It’s sad to see a once great player now consistently perform so badly.

Off the pace 3

Kieran Gibbs

Taken off at the break as a precaution as he still has a tight quad muscle, the full-back switched-off in the build-up to Blackpool’s opener.

Underperforming 4

Semi Ajayi

Deployed in a holding midfield role, it was an experiment that didn’t really work with Ajayi much more suited to being a centre-back.

Scored with a good header from a corner.

Out of position 5

Filip Krovinovic

Asked to do a job on the right of midfield, Krovinovic had some decent efforts from distance but, overall, looked lost in the role.

Lost 4

Jake Livermore

Back in the side and back wearing the armband, Livermore buzzed around the pitch trying to make things happen.

One of Albion’s better performers.

Energetic 6

Conor Gallagher

The Chelsea loanee did everything he could to get forward and support Matheus Pereira.

But while the work-rate was there end product wasn’t with Gallagher twice firing over when well-placed.

Worked hard 5

Kamil Grosicki

Sent in the delivery for Ajayi’s equaliser and won the penalty when his cross hit the arm of a defender.

But this was still an inconsistent display from the winger who drew criticism from team mates for a lack of defensive work.

Inconsistent 6

Matheus Pereira

Played as a false nine, Pereira sprayed some lovely passes and had some nice touches on the ball.

But they were all from the deep areas he is comfortable in – and that meant Albion had no focal point to their attack.

Bright-ish 6

Substitutes

Darnell Furlong (for Gibbs 46) 6; Kyle Edwards (for Gallagher 61) 6; Romaine Sawyers (for Bartley 61) 5; Cedric Kipre (for Ivanovic 72) 5; Dara O’Shea (for Peltier 96).

Subs not used: Lonergan, Harper, Richards, Harmon.
