Football needs a Covid circuit break, insists Albion boss Sam
Albion boss Sam Allardyce has joined the growing calls for football to have a ‘circuit break’ in a bid to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
Earlier this month Newcastle had to call off their game with Villa after COVID-19 ravaged their squad.
And on Monday Man City’s match at Everton on was postponed due to rising cases within the City camp.
Albion have also been hard hit by COVID-19 with around 15 players and staff testing positive in November.
With the virus once again on the rise thanks to a new, more contagious, strain, it is understood some top-flight clubs have proposed the game takes a two-week ‘cooling off’ period – a proposal Allardyce supports.
“When I hear the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus, we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break,” he said.
“I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid.
“I’m very concerned for myself and football in general. If that’s what needs to be done we need to do it.
“We had one positive result this week. It seems to be creeping around no matter how hard we try.”
