Slaven Bilic: West Brom win worth more than three points

Boss Slaven Bilic feels Albion’s win over Sheffield United was worth a lot more than just three points.

The two teams entered the clash at The Hawthorns as the only sides in the Premier League yet to win a game this season.

But it was Bilic’s men who ended that unwanted record with a 12th minute goal from Conor Gallagher the difference between the teams.

This clash, though, was arguably more about the chances that were missed instead of the one that was taken.

Blades goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale - a boyhood Baggies - made excellent saves to prevent Karlan Grant and Kyle Bartley doubling the home side’s advantage.

Sam Johnstone also made two outstanding saves to deny Oli McBurnie

While right at the death, Lys Mousset fired over from just three yards - in what could turn out to be the miss of the season.

“It was a huge three points, it was crucial for both teams to get that win, that’s why it was a good game - with plenty of shots,” Bilic said.

“We’re delighted with the points, I’m pleased with the way we played.

“Although it’s not late in the season, it’s more than three points - a six pointer.

“For both teams it was a chance to get that first win. And it was also against a team that is around you, so it is one of those games that it is more than a normal win.”

Albion entered the game having played well against both Tottenham and Manchester United in their last two outings only to fall to defeat.

And while, on the balance of play, Sheffield United deserved a point - for Bilic winning was the only thing that mattered.

“It’s great to win - it’s the first win, no matter how well we think we’re playing, we didn’t get anything from the last few games,” he continued.

“Then there’s always that cloud with the question mark - when are we going to get our first win? We had to capitalise on that and bring something home.

“We didn’t lie - we had a great work ethic on the training ground, a great atmosphere, but we weren’t getting the results or the rewards.

“We have now, it’s a big boost and we must take it into our coming games.”
