At the other end, Sam Johnstone made an impressive stop to keep out an Ashley Barnes header while Chris Wood hit the bar.

And Bilic admitted a point apiece was fair overall after both teams had chances to win it.

“A draw was a fair result but it is not what we were looking for - our line-up and our philosophy showed that,” the Croatian said.

We created more than enough to score a goal, not one but two ever.

“To be fair, though, you have to say they had three good chances.

“But I told the guys to be very positive because I saw a big team effort, right from the beginning.

“I saw really good basics, really good organsation. The guys gave me everything.

“And also we had possession that we didn't have in the first four game.

“We got a clean sheet and we created more than enough chances to score a goal.

“We have to use this game as something to build on and move forward feeling positive.”

Bilic admitted both Johnstone and Pope deserved plaudits for how they played.

And the boss believes the clean sheet will give his belief and confidence going forward.

“He (Johnstone) made a couple of great saves - that is why we have got him,” Bilic added.

“He was very good in the Championship.

“Those saves he made - and more importantly the clean sheet - are giving him and the team confidence and proof they are good enough.

“A lot of our players have been watching these teams on the tele over the past few years.

“I can tell them you are good enough, you are good enough, you are good enough.

“But if they don’t feel it, if they don’t have that experience.

“But points, wins, clean sheets - that is how you feel it. He was really good.

“Their keeper (Pope) also made a few good saves.

“We could have won it, we could have lost it - it’s probably a fair result but there are a lot of positives that we can take forward.”
