Lincoln – under the guidance of former Baggies coach Michael Appleton – swooped early in the window to land goalkeeper Alex Palmer and striker Callum Morton. But after Morton picked up a shoulder injury, they moved to cover his absence by bringing in fellow Albion youngster Jamie Soule.

Doncaster – who are managed by former Baggies boss Darren Moore – have added winger Rayhaan Tulloch to their ranks, while League Two Cheltenham have landed goalkeeper Josh Griffiths and midfielder Finn Azaz.

To find out how they are getting on, we spoke to the club reporters covering those sides. Here is what they had to say.

Alex Palmer, Callum Morton and Jamie Soule (Lincoln)

Mark Whiley, Lincoln reporter for the Lincolnshire Echo: “Alex Palmer has been outstanding so far, making some impressive saves whilst also oozing confidence and authority. He’s also good with the ball at his feet, which is something Appleton wants from his keeper.

“Palmer could have perhaps done a little better with a couple of the goals conceded against Liverpool in the League Cup. But, overall, he has been very impressive and it was no surprise to see him nominated for the League One Player of the Month award.

“Callum has looked very dangerous in the short bursts we’ve seen of him so far.

“He started the game at Bradford in the Carabao Cup and scored a good goal.

“But unfortunately, soon after that, he suffered a shoulder injury in the gym and is out for around two months. But Appleton is still keen to keep him around the squad for when he returns.

“It’s just been the one game for Jamie Soule so far, but he has already made an impact, scoring the first goal in the 3-1 win at Mansfield in the EFL Trophy.

“While he couldn’t miss, he was in the right place at the right time. But with Lincoln playing one main striker in Tom Hopper, he may find himself on the bench for league games.”

Rayhaan Tulloch (Doncaster)

Liam Hoden, Doncaster Rovers writer for the Doncaster Free Press: “It’s been a frustrating start for Tulloch due to a hamstring injury just 10 minutes into his second game for the club.

“His first match was a difficult one as Rovers were second best for much of their clash with MK Dons. He started on the left of an advanced midfield three and it took him a while to settle into the game.

“But once he did, he showed his pace and direct running to cause problems for the opposition before grabbing an assist.

“He brilliantly kept a deep cross in and produced a trick to take him past his marker and deliver a cross which was turned in.

“He seems to have settled in well despite his injury and Darren Moore is certainly excited about the potential he has.”

Josh Griffiths and Finn Azaz (Cheltenham)

Jonathan Palmer, a sports journalist for Gloucester live: “Josh Griffiths kept a clean sheet on his 19th birthday in a 1-0 Carabao Cup first-round win over Peterborough United on his debut.

“It was a great way to kick off his loan spell and his standards have been high ever since.

“Griffiths has looked calm, composed and his handling has been impeccable, so technically he appears to have everything.

“He has pulled off some spectacular saves, but Cheltenham’s defensive shape and organisation mean that he is rarely overworked. What he has had to do, he has done it to a high standard and he does not look at all shaky.

“The main area for improvement appears to be his kicking under pressure, but when he has the ball at his feet he has shown he is capable of clipping accurate passes around the pitch.

“A hugely promising start to his temporary spell and it’s a short commute in for Griffiths across from Herefordshire, which is a bonus.

“Finn Azaz is operating in a ‘number 10’ role supporting two centre forwards and has excelled so far.

“He scored with a fine low finish in the Carabao Cup second-round defeat at Millwall after going on from the bench at half-time.

“But in League Two he has started all four matches so far and netted the first Football League goal of his career in the 2-0 win at Leyton Orient.

“Like Griffiths, Azaz has not struggled whatsoever with the physical challenge of League Two so far.

“He has plenty of tricks and flicks in his locker but has already shown progress regarding when to try things and when to keep it simple.

“His ability has shone through since pre-season and he looks a real talent based on his early competitive appearances.”
