Sam Johnstone

Albion's man of the match by a country mile. The goalkeeper made two outstanding stops in the first half to keep the Baggies in the game. The first was a spectacular double save to prevent Semi Ajayi scoring an own-goal and Che Adams then firing in. The second was an equally impressive full-stretch stop to keep out a Danny Ings header. 9

Dara o'Shea

Moved to right-back after Slaven Bilic opted to move away from a 3-4-3 formation, O'Shea had a difficult afternoon and couldn't cope with the movement of Ryan Bertrand and Moussa Djenepo. 4

Semi Ajayi

Ajayi's pace ensured he defended well at times. He also looked a threat from set-pieces and was unlucky not to connect with a couple of Matheus Pereira deliveries. 5

Kyle Bartley

Johnstone spared his blushes with that fantastic first save. Bartley his head on a lot of crosses that came into the Albion the box. But he also struggled with the movement of Ings and Adams. 5

Conor Townsend

The Baggies looked weak at full-back. Up against Kyle Walker-Peters and Stuart Armstrong, Townsend was second best all afternoon. 4

Romaine Sawyers

With Conor Gallagher on board and Filip Krovinovic re-signed, Sawyers needed a good performance. But he didn't produce one and gave the ball away far too often. 4

Jake Livermore

The skipper worked hard and gave his all. But Bilic's 4-2-3-1 system didn't work here, with him and Sawyers failing to get any sort of grip on the game. 4

Kyle Edwards

A somewhat surprise inclusion, the winger worked hard in a bid to provide protection for O'Shea on the right. He did that well at times and had Albion's only shot on target. Subbed at half-time. 6

Matheus Pereira

Back in the number 10 role, Albion's only threat came from his set-piece delivery. Pereira also had some nice moments on the ball where he showed his quality. But he is never going to be at his best when the team is struggling. 6

Grady Diangana

The winger gave the ball away in the build-up to Southampton's first goal. Otherwise, like Pereira, Diangana had some nice moments – they were just few and far between. 5

Callum Robinson

The striker worked his socks off up front, but had nothing to feed off other than scraps. 5

Substitutes
