Callum Robinson has a central role to play for West Brom

Slaven Bilic says Callum Robinson’s versatility will be important for Albion – but the head coach believes his best position is up front.

Robinson joined the Baggies on loan from Sheffield United last season and impressed playing off the left flank. But he was given the nod to start up front in the final day clash against QPR – with the 25-year-old going on to score as Albion clinched promotion.

Robinson joined the Baggies permanently earlier this month in a swap deal that saw Oliver Burke move to Bramall Lane.

He has since started the Premier League clashes against Leicester and Everton as a central striker. And that is where Bilic plans to use him most this season.

“For the QPR game, he (Robinson) gave us something we don’t normally have in that position,” the Croatian said.

“He was running in behind, he was electric. Their defence was never comfortable with him.

“Up front we have quality players but they are all different types of player.

“In that position, he gives us energy, that is why he played that position. He gave us energy.

“Yes, he can cover both positions – on the wings and up front and we are going to mix him in those positions. But now I treat him as a striker who can play on the wing. I’m not treating him as a winger who can play as a striker.”

Albion are in the market for another striker to lead the line with Huddersfield’s Karlan Grant understood to be Bilic’s number one target.

Watford duo Andre Gray and Troy Deeney are also options on loan, as is Rennes forward M’Baye Niang.

And speaking after the League Cup defeat to Brentford, Bilic reiterated that Albion need reinforcements.

“Hopefully, hopefully,” the Croatian said when asked if there will be more additions.

“Everybody knows we need a couple of more players. We are doing everything to get them.

“I hope the owners will recognise the situation and help us getting there.”
