Oliver Burke set to return to West Brom with move to Celtic in doubt

Oliver Burke's dream move to Celtic this summer is under threat after the Scottish champions offered Neil Lennon the manager's job.

The Albion forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic Park, previously expressed his desire to move north of the border permanently.

But Burke was signed by Brendan Rodgers in January, and has struggled for minutes since Rodgers joined Leicester City and Lennon took over as caretaker.

After guiding Celtic to their third treble in a row, Lennon was offered the job on a permanent basis.

Burke cost Albion £15million in the summer of 2017, and the Baggies still owe RB Leipzig a final payment of £5m for that transfer.

But he struggled for minutes under three different managers at The Hawthorns and went on loan to Celtic in January.

His loan started brightly under Rodgers, and he scored four goals in his first seven Scottish Premiership appearances.

But the 22-year-old was dropped by Lennon after the first two games of his tenure, and only started one of the next seven league games.

Burke did start the final two league games of the season once Celtic had already wrapped up the title, but didn't feature in the Scottish Cup semi-final or final.

The forward, who still has three years left on his Albion contract, appeared to say goodbye to Celtic on social media.

Burke said: “Wow! What can I say. What an amazing club to have been a part of! Such a fantastic bunch of bhoys and staff.

"I really want to thank everybody for all there support. It’s been a real privilege to be a part of!”

Burke has only made 21 appearances for Albion since his £15m move, and the majority of those have been off the substitute's bench.

He's only started two league games for the Baggies – and his only goal for the club came against Luton Town in the League Cup at the start of last season.

Albion sent him to Celtic in order to develop him for their own team next season, and there is a feeling at the Baggies that his pace is better suited up front than on the wing.

The new manager is expected to cast an eye over Burke in pre-season before deciding whether to incorporate him into his squad or attempt to find him another club.

Burke has been named in the first Scotland squad selected by former Albion manager Steve Clarke for the country's upcoming matches with Cyprus and Belgium.
