The Baggies are in the midst of their interviewing process, and Cowley is one of the men they are keen to speak to.

However, the 40-year-old is not the only contender on the shortlist, with Chris Hughton and others in the frame.

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill was considered but has not made the shortlist and is not currently in contention for the role.

Albion are keen to appoint a hungry manager with fresh ideas to help rebuild the club this summer.

Cowley has guided the Imps to two promotions in three years. He would cost the Baggies £500,000 under the terms of his contract, which has another three years left to run.

Norwich, Nottingham Forest, and Ipswich have all previously looked at Cowley and his brother Nicky, who is his trusted assistant.

However, the pair have never managed at a higher level than League Two and would represent a bold appointment.

Technical director Luke Dowling is interviewing candidates this week and next week.
