Proud Sam Field desperate for FA Cup run with West Brom

Sam Field is desperate for an FA Cup run to exorcise the demons of 2008 and give him more chances to play.

The 20-year-old helped the Baggies hold Brighton to a goalless draw in the fourth round on Saturday – but Field already has eyes on the replay at The Hawthorns next week.

A lifelong Albion fan, he went to Wembley with his dad Trev for the FA Cup semi-final Albion lost to Portsmouth 11 years ago.

He still winces when he thinks about that game, and is keen to progress in the competition.

"I want to write my own history here," he said. "I remember watching the semi-final when we lost to Portsmouth in 2008 and that was horrible.

"That was our best chance to win it. You never know, you might the get big teams slip up and we can do something.

"If we could do that and repeat that it would be unbelievable.

"It was 11 years ago so I was about nine or ten. I remember sitting with my dad. It felt like we got robbed that game.

"I remember it quite well. The two times I went to Wembley we didn't do well.

"We lost to Derby in the play-offs and that one. Hopefully if we get there again we can do a bit better."

Field impressed on Saturday at the base of a midfield three made up entirely of academy products aged between 18 and 20.

And he gave Rekeem Harper and Kyle Edwards a little pep talk before the game.

"I'm used to playing with those lads on Sunday mornings," he said. "It's a big change from that to playing in front of 27,000 fans.

"I said before the game 'let's show the gaffer how mature we are' and I think we all did.

"I wasn't worried about us getting overrun it was just 'lads, we know what we can do'.

"I'm delighted for each and every one of them and myself as well."

Field was one of five academy products to get on the pitch on Saturday, and seven of the starting XI that held Brighton were 25 or under.

"I think we've probably had the oldest squad in the world in previous years!" he laughed. "But you learn off the likes of Barry, Brunt, Jake, and Mozza.

"It's brilliant for us to watch them and when we get our chance to step in we just want to do it well.

"To have five (academy players) on, I'm sure (academy manager) Mark Harrison will be over the moon with that. We owe a lot to him."

Moore made nine changes to his side, but Field insists Albion are taking the FA Cup seriously.

"We'd love a cup run, the manager has gone on about it," he said. "There's a lot of games in the Championship and obviously that will be the priority, but cup runs just build momentum.

"Playing like that I'm sure we can cause a lot of teams a lot of problems.

"Just because some of the lads haven't played in the league doesn't mean they're not good players.

"There's a great bond at the club and well get on really well and want the best for each other.

"No-one was thinking 'we'll be weak here'. We were all looking forward to it and trusted each other and I think that quite clearly showed on the pitch."
