The Baggies were always hoping to boost their options in midfield during this window, but Livermore’s suspension has moved it to the forefront of their plans.

Albion are also looking for a forward this month, and could let forgotten £15million man Oliver Burke leave on loan.

But Livermore’s suspension has made midfield the priority.

After his second red card of the season, Livermore will miss the rest of Albion’s games this month.

He was shown a straight red for hauling Blackburn Rovers midfielder Lewis Travis to the floor.

Although it was a borderline sending off, Albion decided not to appeal the red card at risk of getting a lengthier ban for the midfielder.

Three of Darren Moore’s current options in central midfield are in their 30s, with Gareth Barry turning 38 next month, Chris Brunt aged 34, and James Morrison aged 32.

Wes Hoolahan, 36, is an option off the bench, but his future at Albion is up in the air with his current contract running out later this month.

Burke’s future is also in doubt, with a number of clubs, including Scottish champions Celtic, and fellow Championship clubs Wigan and Millwall, reportedly eyeing up a potential loan deal for the winger.

The 21-year-old was not named in any Albion squads over the busy festive period despite Moore delving into his squad.
