Albion lost their first game in eight league outings on Saturday. Here, we rate the players.

Craig Dawson and Jake Livermore had afternoons to forget. (AMA)

SAM JOHNSTONE

Made some smart saves before the Josh Windass winner, which there was little he could have done about. Distribution was a mixed bag, but there was more good than bad from his feet. 6/10

CRAIG DAWSON

Made an important covering block early on and put the ball on Rodriguez's head up the other end. But was arguably lucky to stay on the pitch and not concede a penalty when he tripped Powell on the edge of the box while on a yellow. Played 20 minutes with a knock before coming off. 5/10

AHMED HEGAZI

Won several towering headers but gave away possession in his own half too frequently. Windass breezed past him too easily for the goal, although he was left slightly isolated. Moments before that, for some reason, he was trying to stop Wigan's keeper from kicking the ball when he should have been retreating. 5/10

KYLE BARTLEY

Strolled forward with purpose at times, but also lacked conviction at others. One Cruyff-turn on the touchline (which seemed to give Livermore the idea) didn't come off, and at times he was played into trouble by his team-mates. 6/10

TYRONE MEARS

Flashed a first-time shot over the bar after good work from Barnes, and regularly looked off the pace. Doesn't seem capable of getting back in time to help out the defence, and doesn't always seem sure of his positioning at wing-back, although his passing was solid enough. 5/10

JAKE LIVERMORE

Someone was bound to get sent off in such a feisty game, and Livermore was just the unlucky one. His first yellow was stupid but his second yellow was soft. However, it came about because Albion played themselves into trouble at the back and he can't have too many complaints. An off day in a good season, but he apologised to both the players and the fans afterwards. 5/10

CHRIS BRUNT

Played some incisive passes forward into Barnes and was always looking for the ball. But too often he ran into trouble and complained to the ref when he simply lost possession. Wasn't afraid to put in a tackle though, and the way he was snapping at heels would have made Claudio Yacob proud. 6/10

KIERAN GIBBS

Made more tackles than any other player on the pitch but struggled to have his usual impact going forward. Pinned back well by Reece James, who was determined to move up the pitch. Dallied on the ball the one time he had a chance to shoot but most of Wigan's moves came down the other flank. 6/10

HARVEY BARNES

Albion's best player. Should have had a penalty in the second half, and was the only player who looked like creating anything of note in the match. Set up a chance for Mears and added much-needed dynamism to Albion's slow-paced patterns of play. Still their brightest spark. 7/10

JAY RODRIGUEZ

Was booked in the first half when he retaliated to a foul in the by throwing the ball at Gary Roberts's crown jewels and was lucky not to escape a second booking later on when he kicked the ball away. After that, he did keep his temper in check when a couple of questionable decisions went against him. Had a header on target and linked up well with Barnes in the first half. 5/10

DWIGHT GAYLE

Didn't get into the game at all and had an unusually quiet time in front of goal. The ball never really fell for him, although the away supporters still booed the decision to substitute him off in favour of Hal Robson-Kanu. 5/10

Substitutes

Tosin Adarabioyo (Dawson 50)

Neat and assured in possession, but lost the header in the build-up to the goal, which is probably why he's not starting. 5/10

Hal Robson-Kanu (Gayle 75)

Failed to have the desired impact. 5/10

Kyle Edwards (Mears 78)

Held his own but couldn't make a breakthrough. 5/10

Unused: Myhill, Townsend, Field, Hoolahan.
