Darren Moore: West Brom comeback vindicates decision to take star strikers off

Darren Moore believes Albion's late rally at Hillsborough vindicated his gamble to take Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez off with half an hour to go.

The Baggies roared back from 2-0 down tonight with two goals in the 86th and 87th minute to rescue a point at Sheffield Wednesday.

It extends their unbeaten run in the league to six games and came after murmurs of discontent from the travelling fans when Moore removed his two star strikers when they were chasing the game.

"We took the two boys off because I just felt Wednesday were in a rhythm and routine," explained Moore. "They had worked incredibly hard.

"I just felt in the last 15 or 20 minutes they wanted to see the game out, I tried to freshen it up and get certain people in certain areas of the pitch, ask questions of their defence and leave them exposed.

"To make three substitutions like that and for it to come off is pleasing.

"We had chances but I just felt it wasn't quite running for us.

"At 2-0 down we need to get back into the game, we always try and look to win matches, so that's why we made those subs with that intention.

"The subs had a great impact on the game but that's what you try and do, different tactical switches to get a hold in the game and I'm pleased that it worked."

The Baggies pulled one back when Joey Pelupussy put Chris Brunt's cross into his own net before Harvey Barnes scored a superb solo goal, dribbling all the way from the half-way line, a minute later.

"It's a great individual goal, he ran and carried the ball well, he's got an eye for goal and he took his chance very well," said Moore.

"But he'll be the first to say there are aspects of his game he needs to get better at.

"As the games are going by he's showing more and more maturity in his game."

The turning point in the first half came when Dwight Gayle went down in the box under Michael Hector's challenge but a foul was given to Wednesday.

The hosts raced up the other end and doubled their lead through Fernando Forestieri after miscommunication at the back between Kyle Bartley and Craig Dawson.

"I've not seen it yet but from what I'm hearing from my staff we should have had a penalty," said Moore. "We should have defended the goal a bit better though.

"It comes off one of our defenders and fell nicely to the boy. Adam Reach (who scored the first goal) has got dynamite in his feet. As an opposition manager I applaud that.

"But I was disappointed with the second one.

"At half-time it was all about getting back into the game. If we could get the goal we felt it would ask questions of Wednesday and it did.

"We had some chances, but that final killer touch in front of goal which has been prolific in recent weeks, was eluding us tonight.

"However late the goals came, I'm pleased we kept going to the end.

"Even towards the end we thought we'd find a winner, being 2-0 down so late in the game shows good resilience by the boys.

"It was a good valuable point, it keeps that momentum going, so I'm really pleased."
