Harvey Barnes wants to become a tap-in king for West Brom after winning Goal of the Month award

The exciting 20-year-old announced himself to the Baggies in stunning style on the opening day of the season with a curling effort into the top corner with his weaker left foot.

It was voted EFL Goal of the Month for August in a poll ran by Quest TV, the channel that broadcasts highlights of the Football League.

It’s not the only long-range effort he has scored. Barnes also whipped a first-time effort into the bottom corner with his right foot in Albion’s 4-3 thriller at Norwich.

However, the youngster had a one-on-one saved by Jack Butland last weekend and is eager to become more ruthless in front of goal.

“They were two good goals, but I’m hoping to score a few tap-ins now!” he said. “You don’t always see those [long-range shots] go in so to get a couple early on is nice.

“I was surprised to score with my left foot against Bolton, but disappointed not to get the three points. Hopefully next time I score I’ll get the winner.”

Barnes drifted in off the wing to score against Wanderers but since being moved insider into the No.10 role he has become a crucial cog in Darren Moore’s exciting and free-flowing attacking team.

“I’ve played both roles throughout my youth career and I’m comfortable in both,” he said. “Last season I played on the left but I enjoy playing in the middle, you’re a lot more involved in the game and you can create more chances.

“You don’t really have a choice, even if it’s defensively you know you’ve got to work hard. When we’ve got the ball you get freedom to roam.

“You look at us going forward, we’re always a threat. We’ve got to get the balance in games, which I think we have done.

“Even in the QPR game when we scored seven we looked solid at the back.

“It’s not just at the back though, we have to defend from the front and win the ball high.”

And the young attacker, who is on loan from Leicester City for the season, says former striker and Albion assistant Graeme Jones, who is known as ‘Bonner’, has been helping him with his movement.

“I do a lot of work with Bonner,” revealed Barnes. “We’ll do little bits during training, little pointers.

“He’s been really helpful in the central role, giving me different ways to get on the ball.

“Darren’s always helping the team tactically too, and gets us ready for the game. He makes sure things are 100 per cent clear.”
